The Pharmacy Technician performs a full range of pharmacy technician drug distribution duties to support Pharmacy service at the John D. Dingell VA Healthcare System. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification. None at the GS-5 grade level (Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.) English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Grade Determinations: For GS-5 level: Education or Experience. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of experience required for the GS-5 level; or at least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies (KSAs) described at the GS-4 level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems. Assignments. This is the full performance level for pharmacy technicians. Employees at this grade level serve as staff pharmacy technicians receiving little guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and procedures, and require minimal supervision. References: VA HANDBOOK 5005/15 MARCH 17, 2006 PART II APPENDIX G28 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-5. .Physical Requirements: The incumbent should be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds without significant difficulty. Incumbent must be able to stand or sit in one place for considerable time during completion of complex tasks. Both legs required. The work involves regular and recurring physical exertion including walking, bending, prolonged standing, stooping, lifting and carrying packages weighing up to 50 pounds. Dexterity is required for the operation of Pharmacy equipment. ["The incumbent is a Pharmacy Technician in a 24 hours, 7 days a week Pharmacy Service with Inpatient and Outpatient related duties as assigned. The duties include, but not limited to, preparing and delivery of medication orders of either controlled or non-controlled substances, sterile product compounding, hazardous medications, unit dose packaging, non-sterile compounding, ward inspections, automated dispensing cabinet stocking, intake of medications, and preparing intravenous chemotherapy but less than 25% of time. The incumbent is trained and demonstrates familiarity with departmental procedures and policies. The employee must demonstrate knowledge, skills and the abilities to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment, knowledge of and ability to prepare aseptic techniques, knowledge of basic inventory procedures, and knowledge of pharmacy information systems. The ability to apply sound judgment and demonstrate critical thinking skills, developed through experience or training, is required of the incumbent for reasons of providing excellent customer service, safe patient care and fostering best workplace relationships .Due to the busy nature of the pharmacy, daily assignments may change depending on workload demands. In any given day, the incumbent may be called upon to work on several different assignments in the pharmacy to provide services to promote customer satisfaction.
